Why Lighting Matters on Your Wedding or Elopement Day

Why Lighting Matters on Your Wedding or Elopement Day

When couples start planning their wedding or elopement, they usually think about the location, their outfits, the ceremony, flowers, food, and all the little details that make the day feel like them.

One thing that often gets overlooked is lighting.

Lighting can completely change the way your photographs look and feel. The exact same location can appear soft, romantic, warm, and cinematic during one part of the day—and bright, harsh, shadowy, and washed out just a few hours later.

That is why I talk so much about timing when we begin building your wedding or elopement timeline.

Harsh Midday Light vs. Soft Light

The middle of the day is usually when the sun is highest and strongest. On a clear day, this can create harsh shadows under your eyes, nose, and chin. It can also cause squinting, overly bright backgrounds, blown-out skies, uneven skin tones, and strong patches of light across your faces.

This does not mean beautiful photographs are impossible in the middle of the day. An experienced photographer can work with difficult lighting by finding shade, adjusting angles, using trees or buildings to block the sun, and choosing locations carefully.

However, if you are drawn to soft, romantic, glowy images, midday sunlight may not create the look you have been imagining—especially in open locations with very little shade.

Beaches, mountaintops, cliffs, open fields, and overlooks can be especially harsh during the brightest part of the day because there is nowhere to escape the direct sunlight.

HARSH LIGHTING CREATES HEAVY SHADOWS & DARK CIRCLES

Why Sunrise and Sunset Are So Beautiful

Sunrise and sunset provide some of the most flattering natural light of the day.

During these times, the sun sits lower in the sky, which creates softer shadows, warmer tones, beautiful backlighting, and a more romantic atmosphere. Instead of the sun shining directly down onto you, the light wraps around you more naturally.

Sunrise can be especially incredible for popular outdoor locations. There are often fewer people, calmer conditions, cooler temperatures, and a quieter, more intimate feeling. It may require an early start, but it can make a huge difference when privacy and soft light are important to you.

Sunset offers warmer, golden tones and can be a beautiful way to end your wedding or elopement day. Depending on the location, we may begin portraits before sunset and continue through blue hour, giving you a variety of warm, colorful, and moodier images.

The exact lighting will always depend on the weather, landscape, season, and location, but planning around sunrise or sunset gives us the strongest opportunity to create that soft, dreamy look many couples are drawn to.

SUNSET PROVIDES SOFT EVEN LIGHT

Our Timeline Affects Your Final Gallery

Your photographer can guide you, pose you, select the best angles, and make thoughtful creative decisions—but we cannot control the position of the sun.

If you show me photographs filled with soft golden light, glowing skies, and gentle shadows, I will help you create a timeline that gives us the best chance of achieving that look.

Sometimes that means moving the ceremony time.

Sometimes it means scheduling portraits later in the evening.

Sometimes it means waking up before sunrise, taking a break during the afternoon, and meeting again at sunset.

Your timeline should reflect what matters most to you. If photography is one of your biggest priorities, then lighting needs to be part of the planning process from the beginning—not something we try to fix after the entire day has already been scheduled.

What About Traditional Wedding Days?

A traditional wedding day usually has far more moving parts than an elopement. Between getting ready, the ceremony, wedding-party and family photographs, cocktail hour, dinner, speeches, dancing, and spending time with dozens—or even hundreds—of guests, the day can move incredibly fast.

While it may not be realistic to plan every part of a large wedding around perfect lighting, the portions of the day that matter most for your portraits should still be planned intentionally.

You should not have to spend your entire wedding day being pulled away from your guests or feeling like you are constantly chasing photographs. You deserve to be present. You deserve to enjoy dinner, listen to the speeches, hug the people who traveled to celebrate you, dance, laugh, and fully experience the day you worked so hard to plan.

That said, sunset portraits should be treated as an important part of your wedding-day timeline—not something we try to squeeze in only if there happens to be time. This is when the light becomes softer, warmer, and more flattering, creating the romantic, glowy images so many couples are drawn to in my work.

Setting aside intentional time around sunset gives us the best opportunity to create those photographs without rushing, watching the clock, or trying to force them into a five-minute opening between other events. Sunset happens at a specific time, and once that light is gone, we cannot recreate it later in the evening.

For most traditional weddings, a dedicated sunset portrait window allows us to step away briefly, create meaningful photographs in beautiful light, and then return you to your celebration.

However, sunset portraits and a full adventure experience are not always the same thing. If the location you are dreaming of requires significant travel, hiking, multiple stops, or several hours of exploring, trying to fit that into an already packed wedding day can leave you feeling rushed and pulled in too many directions.

For couples who want both a large wedding celebration and epic adventure portraits in another location, booking a separate adventure session may be the best way to have both. You can remain present with your guests on your wedding day while still creating the adventurous, cinematic images you have been envisioning on another day, at the right location and in the best possible light.

Consider Booking an Adventure Session on Another Day

If you want a big traditional wedding and adventurous photographs in an epic location, you do not necessarily have to choose between the two.

You can book an adventure session on another day.

This gives you the freedom to put your wedding attire back on and travel somewhere incredible without worrying about guests waiting, dinner getting cold, speeches starting without you, or the wedding timeline falling behind.

We can choose a completely different location, plan around the best possible lighting, explore without rushing, and create the adventurous images you have always wanted.

You can hike along the coast, wander through the redwoods, climb onto a mountaintop, kayak, run barefoot on the beach, or visit a location that would have been impossible to include during the wedding itself.

An additional adventure session also allows you to be fully present on your wedding day. Instead of disappearing for hours, you can spend meaningful time with your family and friends knowing that your adventure portraits have their own dedicated space.

It is not about recreating your wedding day.

It is about extending the experience and creating something entirely different.

There Is No One Perfect Timeline

Every couple is different.

Some couples care most about privacy. Some want a slow and relaxed experience. Some want a huge celebration with everyone they love. Others want to spend the entire day exploring together.

There is no single timeline that works for every wedding or elopement.

My job is to learn what matters most to you, explain how lighting and timing will affect your photographs, and help you build a day that feels intentional.

You do not have to plan your entire wedding around photography—but if you have a specific style of images in mind, the time of day matters.

The goal is not just to place you somewhere beautiful.

The goal is to place you somewhere beautiful, at the right time, with enough space to slow down, be present, and actually experience it.

NOW LETS TALK AFTER SUNSET AND LIGHTING

AFTER SUNSET – NO LIGHT

Without artificial light,
it will be very dark.
You won’t see the background,
only the couple.

These images can still be intimate and beautiful,
but the background is completely lost.

Once the sun has fully set, I do not recommend scheduling traditional bridal portraits outdoors. Without natural light—or a dedicated artificial-lighting setup—the surrounding scenery will disappear, the background will become extremely dark, and the images will no longer have the soft, natural look you see throughout my work.

It is also important to remember that once the reception is underway, guests will be moving throughout the venue. Trying to create formal bride-and-groom portraits at that point can mean people, tables, chairs, vehicles, and other reception activity appearing in the background. For that reason, your intentional bridal portraits should be completed before the sun is gone, while we still have beautiful light and a clean, controlled setting.

Reception Lighting

That does not mean photography has to stop after sunset. Evening reception coverage can be incredibly fun when the venue has the right lighting. String lights, candles, chandeliers, fire pits, illuminated patios, and other intentional lighting can create a warm atmosphere for dancing, laughter, speeches, and candid moments with your guests.

After-dark photography works best for documenting the energy of the reception—not replacing your dedicated bridal portrait time. Those images will feel more lively, candid, and atmospheric, while your romantic couple portraits should be planned around sunset before the background and natural scenery are lost.

Final Thoughts

Your wedding timeline does more than determine where you need to be and when—it directly affects the way your photographs will look.

Beautiful locations alone are not enough. Lighting matters. Timing matters. Giving ourselves enough space to create without rushing matters.

I will always do everything I can with the conditions we are given, but I cannot recreate soft sunset light once the sun is gone or bring a dark background back without artificial lighting. That is why I am honest about what different times of day will produce and why I strongly recommend planning your most important couple portraits around the best available natural light.

My goal is never to take you away from your wedding day. It is to help you experience it fully while still creating the images you have been dreaming about.

When we build your timeline together, we will look at your location, the season, sunset time, travel, guest experience, and the photographs that matter most to you. From there, we can create a plan that allows you to be present, enjoy your celebration, and walk away with a gallery that truly reflects the beauty of your day.
