✨ Why Lighting Matters

When to Take Photos: Golden Hour, Sunrise & Cloudy Day Lighting

Sunrise vs. Sunset — What You Need to Know

When it comes to your photos, lighting is everything.

Not the outfit. Not the location. Not even the timeline.
Lighting is what brings everything to life.

Whether it’s a wedding, elopement, engagement session, family photos, or just capturing a moment in your life — lighting is what turns an image into something you can actually feel.

As a photographer (and proud “light chaser”), I don’t just show up and take photos — I chase light. The way it filters through the trees, wraps around you, glows along the cliffs of the ocean… that’s where the magic lives.

Sunrise Light — Soft, Quiet, and Intimate

Sunset Light — Warm, Glowing, and Iconic

Sunrise is:

  • Soft and even
  • Calm and peaceful
  • Lightly golden, but more subtle than sunset
  • Often paired with fog or mist

There’s something incredibly intimate about sunrise. The world is quiet. No distractions. Just you, your people, and the moment.

Perfect for:

  • Engagement sessions
  • Elopements
  • Family sessions
  • Anyone wanting a slower, more intentional experience

This is the light everyone falls in love with.

Sunset (golden hour) gives you:

  • Warm, golden tones
  • Soft, flattering light
  • That dreamy glow
  • Depth and emotion

This is when your photos feel like art — no matter the type of session.

It’s perfect for:

  • Weddings + couple portraits
  • Engagement sessions
  • Family photos
  • Maternity + lifestyle sessions

👉 If you want those jaw-dropping, emotional, glowing images… sunset is everything.

Midday Light — Bright, Harsh, and High Contrast

This creates:

  • Strong shadows under the eyes
  • Bright highlights
  • Squinting
  • High contrast on skin

It’s not the most flattering light — but that doesn’t mean your photos won’t be beautiful.

With experience, I use:

  • Shade
  • Natural backlighting
  • Intentional positioning

…to still create amazing images.

👉 That said, when we have flexibility, I always recommend planning around better light.

Overcast Days — Nature’s Softbox

(aka DREAM LIGHT)

Cloudy days are seriously underrated.

An overcast sky acts like a giant natural softbox, giving you:

  • Soft, even lighting
  • No harsh shadows
  • Flattering skin tones
  • Rich, true colors

This kind of light works beautifully for:

  • Any session type
  • Any location
  • Any time of day

👉 Some of the most emotional, moody, and timeless images happen on cloudy days.

✨ Why Timing Still Matters

No matter what type of session you’re planning, timing plays a huge role in your overall experience and final images.

When we plan around light, we:

  • Create a more relaxed experience
  • Avoid harsh lighting challenges
  • Capture real, natural emotion
  • Elevate the overall feel of your gallery

🤍 Final Thoughts

Lighting tells your story just as much as the moment itself.

Whether it’s:

  • The quiet softness of sunrise
  • The golden glow of sunset
  • The dreamy diffusion of an overcast day

I’ll be there chasing the light — guiding you, supporting you, and creating something that feels real, emotional, and completely you.

Indoor Lighting — What You Need to Know

When it comes to indoor photography, lighting matters just as much — if not more — than outdoor lighting.

The biggest difference?
👉 We don’t control the sun… but we do have to work with what’s available indoors.

Indoor lighting can either elevate your photos… or completely change the mood and quality of them.

This is the dream.

Natural window light creates:
Soft, even lighting
Beautiful skin tones
Depth + dimension
A clean, timeless look
This is why I always recommend:
Getting ready near large windows
Opening blinds + curtains
Turning OFF overhead lights when possible

👉 Window light acts very similar to a soft outdoor light — and it photographs beautifully.

💡 Artificial Lighting — Not Always Your Friend

Indoor lighting like:

  • Overhead lights
  • Lamps
  • Yellow/orange bulbs

…can create:

  • Harsh shadows
  • Uneven lighting
  • Yellow or orange color casts
  • Mixed lighting tones (which are tricky to correct)

👉 This is why I often recommend turning off unnecessary indoor lights when using natural light.

⚖️ Mixed Lighting — The Tricky One

When natural light + artificial light mix, it can create:

  • Multiple color tones in one image
  • Skin tones that look off
  • Inconsistent editing results

Example:

  • Window light = cool/neutral
  • Indoor bulbs = warm/orange

👉 This is one of the hardest lighting situations to fix — so simplifying the light source is key.

✨ Getting Ready Spaces — What to Look For

This is HUGE for wedding days 👏

The best indoor spaces have:

  • Large windows
  • Neutral walls
  • Minimal clutter
  • Light-colored rooms

Not-so-ideal spaces:

  • Dark rooms
  • Heavy yellow lighting
  • Small windows
  • Busy/cluttered backgrounds

👉 Even just choosing the right room can completely change your photos.

Reception Lighting — Setting the Mood

4

Reception lighting is usually:

  • Dim
  • Warm
  • Moody

And honestly… it’s part of the vibe ✨

During receptions, I use a mix of:

  • Available light
  • Flash when needed

To capture:

  • Movement
  • Energy
  • Real moments

👉 This is where your gallery starts to feel alive and full of emotion.

💡 Pro Tips for Indoor Photos

  • Get ready near windows whenever possible
  • Turn off overhead lights for cleaner tones
  • Choose bright, neutral spaces
  • Keep areas tidy for a more elevated look
  • Trust your photographer to adjust and guide you

🤍 Final Thoughts

Indoor lighting can feel tricky — but when done right, it creates some of the most intimate, emotional images of your day.

Whether it’s:

  • Soft window light while you’re getting ready
  • Cozy, moody reception lighting
  • Or quiet moments inside

I’ll be there to work with the light, guide you, and create something that feels natural, beautiful, and true to you.
