What to Wear for Your Couples Session: Outfit Tips for Photos That Feel Natural, Romantic, and True to You
One of the biggest questions couples ask before their session is:
“What should we wear?”
And honestly, it makes sense. Your outfits can completely change the feeling of your photos. The right clothing helps you feel confident, comfortable, and connected — while also complementing the location, the light, and the overall story we’re creating together.
But here’s the most important thing to remember: your session should still feel like you.
You don’t need to dress like someone else, follow every trend, or buy a whole new wardrobe unless you want to. The goal is to choose outfits that photograph beautifully, move naturally, and help you feel like the best version of yourselves.
Whether we’re exploring the Oregon Coast, wandering through the Redwoods, walking along a Southern Oregon river, chasing golden light in the mountains, or creating a cozy date-inspired session, here are my best tips for choosing what to wear for your couples photos.
Start With the Feeling You Want Your Photos to Have
Before choosing outfits, think about the mood you want for your session.
Do you want your photos to feel romantic and soft? Adventurous and playful? Cozy and intimate? Elegant and editorial? Wild and windswept?
Your outfits should support that feeling.
For example, a flowy dress or linen outfit can create a soft, romantic look. Denim, boots, and layered jackets can feel more casual and adventurous. A black dress, leather jacket, or tailored outfit can feel moodier and more editorial.
There is no one right answer. The best outfit is the one that fits the story you want your photos to tell.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
You do not need to wear identical colors or matching outfits. In fact, photos usually look more natural when your outfits coordinate without being too matchy.
Think of your outfits as belonging to the same color palette.
If one person wears a warm neutral like cream, tan, rust, or brown, the other person could wear denim, olive, black, or a complementary earth tone. If one outfit has texture or movement, the other can stay simple and balanced.
The goal is for your outfits to feel connected without looking like a uniform.
Choose Colors That Photograph Beautifully Outdoors
For outdoor couples sessions, earth tones and neutrals almost always photograph well.
Some of my favorite colors for couples sessions are:
Cream
Ivory
Tan
Camel
Rust
Burnt orange
Olive green
Sage green
Chocolate brown
Soft blue
Denim
Black
Charcoal
Muted mustard
Dusty rose
Warm beige
These colors tend to blend beautifully with natural landscapes like forests, beaches, cliffs, rivers, fields, and mountain views.
Bright neon colors, super bold patterns, and very intense reds can sometimes pull attention away from your faces and connection. That does not mean color is bad — just choose tones that feel intentional and work well with the environment.
Add Movement
Movement photographs so beautifully, especially for couples sessions.
Flowy dresses, skirts, open button-downs, long cardigans, fringe jackets, linen pieces, wide-leg pants, and textured layers all add motion and life to your images.
If we’re shooting somewhere windy like the Oregon Coast, movement can be magic. A dress blowing in the wind, hair moving naturally, or a jacket catching the breeze can make your photos feel cinematic and alive.
You don’t have to wear a dress if that doesn’t feel like you, but choosing clothing that allows movement will help your photos feel less stiff and more natural.
Think About Texture
Texture adds depth to photos without feeling distracting.
Great textures include:
Linen
Denim
Wool
Corduroy
Knits
Suede
Leather
Lace
Crochet
Flannel
Chunky sweaters
Soft cotton
Flowy fabric
Texture is especially beautiful in locations like the Redwoods, Oregon Coast, and Southern Oregon because it adds warmth and visual interest without taking away from the scenery.
Dress for the Location
Your outfits should make sense with the place we’re photographing.
If we’re hiking, walking through sand, climbing over rocks, or exploring trails, you’ll want shoes and clothing that allow you to move comfortably. If we’re shooting on the coast, bring layers because the wind can be chilly even when it feels warm inland. If we’re in the Redwoods, keep in mind that the forest can feel cooler and darker than expected.
Here are a few location-based outfit ideas:
For the Oregon Coast
The coast is romantic, wild, windy, and full of movement.
Great outfit ideas include:
Flowy dresses
Linen sets
Denim and cozy sweaters
Earth-toned layers
Barefoot beach looks
Neutral jackets
Hats
Boots or sandals you can easily take off
Colors that work beautifully on the coast:
Cream, tan, rust, denim, black, olive, soft blue, warm brown, ivory, and muted earth tones.
The coast is also a great place to embrace windblown hair, movement, and outfits that feel a little adventurous.
For the Redwoods
The Redwoods are rich, moody, earthy, and romantic.
Great outfit ideas include:
Cream or ivory dresses
Rust or burnt orange tones
Olive or deep green pieces
Denim jackets
Black outfits
Textured sweaters
Boots
Wool coats
Earth-toned layers
Colors that photograph beautifully in the Redwoods:
Cream, camel, rust, mustard, olive, black, brown, ivory, and warm neutrals.
Since the forest can be dark, lighter colors like cream, ivory, tan, and warm neutrals can help you stand out beautifully against the deep greens and browns.
For Rivers, Waterfalls, and Mountain Locations
These locations feel adventurous, natural, and grounded.
Great outfit ideas include:
Denim
Boots
Flowy skirts
Layered jackets
Casual dresses
Linen tops
Hiking-inspired pieces
Cozy sweaters
Earth-toned outfits
Colors that work well:
Olive, rust, tan, cream, denim, chocolate brown, black, mustard, and soft neutrals.
For river or waterfall sessions, bring shoes you can walk in and possibly a second pair if we’ll be near water.
For Downtown or Date-Night Sessions
If your session is more of a coffee date, ice cream date, downtown walk, or editorial-style session, you can have a little more fun with your outfits.
Great ideas include:
Black dress
Leather jacket
Denim and boots
Tailored pants
Cute heels or boots
Statement jacket
Vintage-inspired outfit
Casual but elevated layers
Classy date-night look
This style works beautifully if you want your session to feel like an actual date instead of a traditional photoshoot.
Bring Two Outfits If You Want Variety
If your session allows time for an outfit change, bringing two outfits can give your gallery more variety.
A good combination is:
One casual outfit that feels relaxed, playful, and natural.
One elevated outfit that feels romantic, dressy, or a little more dramatic.
For example, you could start in jeans and cozy sweaters for walking, laughing, and playful moments, then change into a dress, suit jacket, or more styled outfit for sunset portraits.
This gives you both personality and romance in one session.
Wear Something You Can Move In
Your session will probably include walking, sitting, holding each other, maybe running, dancing, climbing over rocks, walking through tall grass, or exploring trails.
So make sure your clothing allows you to move.
If something is too tight, uncomfortable, constantly needs adjusting, or makes you feel self-conscious, it may not be the best choice. The more comfortable you feel, the more natural your photos will look.
Your outfit should help you feel confident — not distracted.
Shoes Matter
Shoes can make or break an adventure session.
If we’re shooting somewhere outdoors, bring shoes that match the terrain. Boots, sandals, casual sneakers, or comfortable dress shoes are usually better than heels on uneven ground.
For beach sessions, you can often go barefoot. For forest, river, or rocky locations, bring shoes with grip. If you want to wear heels or dressier shoes for a few photos, bring them — but also bring walking shoes for moving between spots.
Comfortable shoes mean you can focus on each other instead of worrying about slipping, sinking into sand, or hurting your feet.
Avoid Distracting Logos and Tiny Patterns
Large logos, bold graphics, and tiny busy patterns can distract from the emotion of your photos.
Instead, choose pieces that feel timeless and simple.
Solid colors, subtle patterns, texture, and layering usually photograph better than loud prints. If you love patterns, go for larger, softer, or more organic patterns rather than tiny stripes or tight checks.
The focus should stay on your connection.
Layers Are Your Best Friend
Layers add depth, movement, and variety to your photos.
Think:
Jackets
Cardigans
Flannels
Kimonos
Shawls
Hats
Scarves
Coats
Open button-downs
Vests
Layers are especially helpful on the Oregon Coast and in the Redwoods because the weather can change quickly. They also give us more variety without needing a full outfit change.
You can wear the jacket, take it off, wrap it around your shoulders, hold it, or use it as part of the movement in your photos.
Don’t Forget the Little Details
Small details can make a big difference.
Before your session, consider:
Steaming or ironing your clothes
Removing lint or pet hair
Cleaning your shoes
Checking for visible tags
Bringing chapstick
Touching up nails if you want close-up hand photos
Trimming facial hair or cleaning up edges if desired
Wearing jewelry that feels like you
Bringing a hairbrush or touch-up makeup
You do not have to be perfect. These little things just help your photos feel more polished.
Dress Like Yourselves
The best outfits are the ones that feel true to who you are.
If you never wear dresses, you do not have to wear one. If you love dressing up, go all in. If you’re more casual, cozy, outdoorsy, edgy, romantic, colorful, or laid-back, let that show.
Your session is not about pretending to be a different couple.
It’s about documenting this season of your love in a way that feels honest, beautiful, and real.
Make It Personal
Your outfits can also connect to the experience you’re planning.
If we’re doing a picnic session, think cozy, romantic, and relaxed. If we’re kayaking or exploring the river, choose something you can move in. If we’re grabbing coffee or ice cream, go for a cute date-night look. If we’re hiking or wandering the coast, wear layers, comfortable shoes, and pieces that can handle a little adventure.
Your clothing should match the story we’re telling.
A Few Outfit Pairing Ideas
Here are a few easy combinations that photograph beautifully:
Cream dress + denim shirt and dark jeans
Rust dress + black jeans and tan jacket
Olive skirt + cream sweater and denim
Black dress + black jeans and neutral jacket
Flowy neutral dress + linen button-down and chinos
Denim and sweaters in warm earth tones
White top and jeans + brown jacket and boots
Tan linen set + soft blue or denim accents
Floral dress + simple neutral outfit
Chunky sweater + flowy skirt and boots
You can be casual, dressy, adventurous, romantic, or a mix of everything.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, what you wear should help you feel comfortable, confident, and connected.
Choose outfits that let you move, laugh, hold each other close, explore, and be fully present together. The most beautiful photos come from real connection — the way you look at each other, the way you laugh, the way you reach for each other, and the little in-between moments that make your relationship yours.
So wear something that feels good. Choose colors that complement your location. Bring layers, comfortable shoes, and maybe a second outfit if you want variety.
And most importantly, show up ready to enjoy the experience together.
Because your couples session is not about being perfect.
It’s about capturing the way this chapter of your love feels.
