How to Elope in Redwood National Park

A Complete Redwoods Elopement Guide

There are few places in the world that feel as magical and timeless as the Redwoods of Northern California. Towering ancient trees, quiet forest trails, and soft golden light filtering through the canopy create an incredibly romantic setting for couples who want an intimate and adventurous wedding day.

Redwood National and State Parks are home to some of the tallest trees on earth, making them one of the most breathtaking locations for an elopement. Many couples choose the Redwoods because of the peaceful atmosphere, natural beauty, and the opportunity to celebrate their wedding day surrounded by nature rather than in a traditional venue.

As a Pacific Northwest and adventure elopement photographer, I often photograph couples traveling to the Redwoods for their wedding day. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about planning a Redwoods elopement — from the best ceremony locations to permits, timing, and helpful planning tips.

Why Elope in the Redwoods

Eloping in the Redwoods offers something truly unique. Instead of a busy venue or crowded city setting, couples can exchange vows in quiet forest groves surrounded by some of the oldest living trees on the planet.

Some of the reasons couples love eloping in the Redwoods include:

• Towering old-growth trees that create an incredible natural backdrop
• Quiet and peaceful ceremony locations
• A sense of adventure and connection with nature
• Beautiful soft light that filters through the forest canopy
• Close proximity to the Northern California coast for sunset portraits

Many couples choose to combine their Redwoods ceremony with a trip to the nearby Oregon Coast, creating a full adventure experience for their wedding day.

Where is Redwood National Park?

Redwood National Park is located in Northern California near the Oregon border. The park is actually part of a group of protected areas known as Redwood National and State Parks, which include:

• Redwood National Park
• Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park
• Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park
• Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park

These parks stretch along the Northern California coastline and contain some of the most famous Redwood groves in the world.

For couples traveling from Southern Oregon, the Redwoods are only about 2 hours from Grants Pass and Ashland, making them an easy destination for an intimate wedding or elopement.

Best Places to Elope in the Redwoods

There are countless beautiful locations throughout Redwood National and State Parks, but a few areas stand out as particularly incredible for ceremonies and portraits.

Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park

Jedediah Smith is one of the most popular locations for Redwoods elopements because of its dense groves of old-growth trees and quiet forest trails. The famous Stout Grove is located here and offers one of the most iconic Redwoods landscapes.

This park is perfect for couples who want a secluded ceremony surrounded by towering trees and soft forest light.

Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park

Prairie Creek is known for its lush ferns, open meadows, and dramatic forest scenery. It also contains one of the most unique locations in the park system: Fern Canyon.

Fern Canyon is famous for its vertical walls covered in ferns and moss, creating an almost prehistoric landscape that feels incredibly magical for photos.

Lady Bird Johnson Grove

Located just off Highway 101, Lady Bird Johnson Grove offers beautiful forest trails and incredible old-growth trees. It’s a quieter area that works well for small ceremonies and intimate portraits.

Gold Bluffs Beach

For couples who want a combination of forest and coastline, Gold Bluffs Beach offers a stunning beach location within the park system. Many couples choose to take sunset portraits here after their ceremony in the Redwoods.

Do You Need a Permit to Elope in the Redwoods?

Yes, most ceremonies inside Redwood National and State Parks require a Special Use Permit.

The permit helps the park service manage visitor impact and protect the natural environment.

Typically, the process includes:

• submitting an application
• paying a permit fee
• choosing an approved ceremony location
• following visitor guidelines for the park

Permit requirements can vary depending on the exact location and the number of guests attending your ceremony, so it’s always a good idea to check with the park directly while planning.

Many couples planning an intimate elopement with just a few guests find the permit process simple and straightforward.

Best Time of Year for a Redwoods Elopement

The Redwoods are beautiful year-round, but each season offers a slightly different experience.

Spring

Spring brings lush green ferns, flowing creeks, and fresh forest growth. The Redwoods feel vibrant and alive during this season.

Summer

Summer offers the warmest temperatures and longer daylight hours. It’s also a popular time for visitors, so planning a weekday ceremony can help avoid crowds.

Fall

Fall is one of the most peaceful times in the Redwoods. The weather is often mild, and visitor numbers begin to drop after summer.

Winter

Winter elopements in the Redwoods can feel incredibly quiet and romantic. Mist and fog drifting through the trees create a moody and magical atmosphere.

Example Redwoods Elopement Timeline

One of the best things about eloping is having a relaxed and flexible wedding day. Here’s an example timeline many couples choose when eloping in the Redwoods.

2:00 - 3:00PM – Getting ready at a nearby cabin or Airbnb
3:00 - 3:30PM- Drive to location
3:30 - 4:00PM – First look in the forest
4:00 - 4:30PM – Ceremony in a Redwoods grove
4:30 -5:30 PM – Explore the Redwoods
5:30 - 6PM – Drive to beach
6PM - 7PM – Sunset photos at the coast/cliff
7:30 PM – Dinner or celebration with family at Airbnb

This type of timeline allows couples to enjoy the experience without feeling rushed.

Tips for Planning Your Redwoods Elopement

• Choose a weekday if possible to avoid crowds
• Wear comfortable shoes for forest trails
• Bring layers — temperatures in the Redwoods can change quickly
• Plan extra time to explore and enjoy the scenery
• Consider visiting both the forest and the nearby coastline

The Redwoods offer so many beautiful locations that your elopement can easily turn into a full adventure experience.
