7 Incredible Places to Elope in the Redwoods

The Best Redwood National Park Elopement Locations

The Redwoods of Northern California are one of the most magical places in the world to elope. Towering ancient trees, peaceful forest trails, and soft golden light filtering through the canopy create an unforgettable setting for intimate weddings and adventure elopements.

Located along the Northern California coast near the Oregon border, Redwood National and State Parks are home to some of the tallest trees on earth. Couples travel from all over the country to exchange vows in these incredible forests.

If you're dreaming of a Redwoods elopement, here are some of the most beautiful locations for a ceremony and portraits.

1. Stout Grove

One of the Most Iconic Redwood Ceremony Locations

Stout Grove is one of the most famous groves in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park and is easily one of the most breathtaking places to elope in the Redwoods.

Massive old-growth trees tower hundreds of feet overhead, while soft sunlight filters through the forest creating a peaceful and magical atmosphere. The open forest floor makes this location perfect for intimate ceremonies.

Stout Grove is especially beautiful in the early morning or late afternoon when the light is softer and fewer visitors are present.

Why couples love this location:

• easy access trail
• dramatic old-growth trees
• beautiful soft forest light
• peaceful ceremony setting

2. Fern Canyon

A Unique and Adventurous Elopement Location

Fern Canyon, located in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, is one of the most unique landscapes in the entire Redwood park system.

Steep canyon walls covered in lush ferns create a prehistoric atmosphere that feels like stepping into another world. Couples who want an adventurous elopement experience often choose Fern Canyon for portraits after their ceremony.

The canyon is especially magical in the morning when the light filters softly through the ferns.

3. Lady Bird Johnson Grove

A Quiet Redwood Forest Ceremony Spot

Lady Bird Johnson Grove offers a beautiful and peaceful location for couples looking for a quieter Redwoods ceremony spot.

Located along a scenic ridge in Redwood National Park, this grove features massive old-growth trees and wide forest trails surrounded by ferns and moss.

The gentle trails and open forest areas make this location perfect for small ceremonies and relaxed portrait sessions.

4. Gold Bluffs Beach

A Stunning Coastal Elopement Location

If you want to combine forest and ocean scenery on your wedding day, Gold Bluffs Beach is an incredible location.

Located within Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, this beach offers dramatic cliffs, wide sandy shoreline, and stunning sunsets over the Pacific Ocean.

Many couples choose to have their ceremony in the Redwoods and then travel to Gold Bluffs Beach for sunset portraits.

5. Trillium Falls Trail

A Romantic Redwood Forest Trail

Trillium Falls Trail is a beautiful and relatively quiet trail located in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park.

This trail winds through old-growth redwood groves before reaching a small waterfall surrounded by lush greenery. It’s a wonderful option for couples who want a peaceful ceremony location with a short hike and beautiful forest scenery.

6. Prairie Creek Elk Meadow

Open Landscapes Surrounded by Redwoods

Prairie Creek Elk Meadow offers a completely different landscape compared to dense forest groves.

Wide open meadows surrounded by towering redwoods create a beautiful setting where elk are often seen grazing in the distance. This location offers a mix of forest and open landscapes that work beautifully for portraits.

7. Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park

Redwoods and Ocean Views

Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park offers one of the most scenic combinations of coastal views and redwood forests.

Couples who want both towering trees and dramatic ocean cliffs will love this location. The park offers several scenic trails and overlooks that make incredible backdrops for elopement photos.

Do You Need a Permit to Elope in the Redwoods?

All Photographers and events are required to have a permit. the type of permit is dependant on the type of ceremonies within Redwood National and State Parks.   The permit helps protect the park while allowing couples to celebrate their wedding day in these beautiful natural spaces.

Permit requirements can vary depending on the location and the number of guests attending, As a photographer who applies for numerous permits per year; I can help with the permit process and know which permit is required.

PERMITS ARE REQUIRED SINCE PARKS WENT FROM FEDERAL TO STATE AND ALL PHOTOGRAPHERS AND EVENTS MUST BE PERMITTED!

Best Time of Year for a Redwoods Elopement

The Redwoods are beautiful year-round, but each season offers something different.

Spring brings lush green ferns and flowing creeks.
Summer offers warmer weather and long daylight hours.
Fall is quieter with fewer visitors and mild temperatures.
Winter brings misty forests and a peaceful atmosphere.

Because the Redwoods sit near the coast, the forest stays green and magical throughout the year.

Planning Your Redwoods Elopement

Eloping in the Redwoods is about creating an experience that feels meaningful and adventurous. Many couples combine their ceremony in the forest with sunset portraits along the nearby Northern California or Oregon coastline.

The Redwoods are only a few hours from Southern Oregon, making them an incredible destination for couples traveling to the Pacific Northwest for their wedding day.

Redwoods Elopement Photographer

As an adventure elopement photographer serving the Pacific Northwest, Oregon Coast, and Northern California Redwoods, I help couples plan meaningful wedding experiences in some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country.

Whether you're exchanging vows beneath towering redwoods or exploring the coastline at sunset, the Redwoods offer one of the most unforgettable places to celebrate your wedding day.
